The Plott Retreat was named such to pay homage to our most revered hound dog, Thomas. Despite his humble beginnings as a skittish and shy pound puppy, we knew from first sight that there was something special about Thomas. Once rescued, and on his way to good health, Thomas’s quirky personality blossomed. He became an avid hunter on the 125 acre farm (Mablewood) that he calls home, spending his days from dusk to dawn in the woods. When at home, he displayed such a sincere disposition and was fiercely loyal to his people. While we knew all the things that Thomas was; loving, loyal, intelligent, agile. One thing remained unknown, exactly what kind of dog Thomas was. After more than a year, the mystery finally unraveled, and we discovered that Thomas was a Plott Hound. A highly regarded hunting hound, so cunning it is the state dog of North Carolina. Perfectly described as a “mellow gentleman at home but fearless, implacable, and bold at work.” A hound dog royalty, if you will. A hound so special, he deserves nothing less than his own cabin in the Appalachian Mountains.
